SOUTHWEST LOUISIANA: Today and tomorrow will be mostly clear except for Thursday evening with a 20 percent chance of showers. Friday has a 30 percent chance of thunderstorms throughout the day and continuing into Saturday and Sunday.

HAZARDOUS WEATHER: Scattered thunderstorms will be possible each day from Friday through Monday. A few storms may be strong to severe Friday and Saturday with the greatest threat being damaging winds. A persistent moderate to strong onshore flow is expected to develop Thursday and continue through early next week. Additionally, the astronomical tide cycle will be at large spring tide ranges this weekend. These conditions will combine to produce unusually high water levels that will result in the potential for coastal flooding outside the hurricane protection levee systems. Small craft advisory conditions will be possible for the gulf coastal waters from late Thursday through Saturday as a result of the expected development of strong onshore flow and building seas.

SOUTHWEST LOUISIANA: Today there is a 40% chance for thunderstorms throughout the day. Saturday has a 50% chance of thunderstorms with mostly clear skies in the evening. Sunday through Tuesday is forecast to be sunny and clear to cloudy in the evenings.

HAZARDOUS WEATHER: A strong upper level storm system will move into the southern plains during the day and allow for scattered showers and thunderstorms to develop across the area. Increasing atmospheric instability and strengthening wind shear profiles indicate that any storms that develop may become strong to severe during the late morning and afternoon hours. Large hail, damaging winds and isolated tornadoes are all possible in the stronger storms. The highest risk for severe weather will be across central and south central Louisiana. A break in precipitation is expected during the evening hours as a strong capping inversion limits activity. After midnight, the upper level storm system will move across the area with a second round of scattered showers and thunderstorms expected by sunrise. Large hail, damaging winds and tornadoes will be possible with any thunderstorms that develop. The highest risk for severe weather will be across central and south central Louisiana. As the upper level storm system and associated cold front move across the region early Saturday, additional showers and thunderstorms are expected area wide. All precipitation will come to an end Saturday afternoon as the cold front moves rapidly eastward away from the area.

The Atchafalya River at Morgan City is currently at 4.66 feet (Minor flood stage). Minor flood stage is from 4 to 7 feet. The river is expected to recede over the next few days. At 4 to 5 feet, water may move up the bank and across access roads below the city dock.

Winds and seas will continue to increase to around 25 mph over all marine areas today through Saturday. Small craft advisories are posted today through Saturday for most areas. Winds will ease tonight for a short while before increasing once again Saturday. Strong to severe thunderstorms will continue to be possible Saturday as a cold front slowly moves through the area. A moderate risk of severe weather will exist over the northern half of the area while a slight risk of severe thunderstorms will cover the southern half. HAZARDOUS WEATHER: A vigorous storm system is forecast to move across the region late this afternoon into this evening. A combination of unstable air, strong wind shear and increased low-level moisture will allow for an environment conducive to strong to severe thunderstorms, with the main threat being damaging winds, hail, isolated tornadoes and flash flooding. A secondary upper-level disturbance will allow for a continued threat of severe weather Saturday morning from around 3 am through noon across the majority of the four state region. Rainfall amounts approaching three inches can be expected along a line from Jacksonville Texas., through Shreveport and into El Dorado Arkansas. Along with heavy rainfall, damaging winds and isolated tornadoes will be possible.

SOUTHWEST LOUISIANA: Today will be mostly sunny and mostly cloudy in the evening. Tomorrow there is a 30% chance for thunderstorms during the day and 40% chance in the evening. Saturday has a 50% chance of thunderstorms with mostly clear skies in the evening. Sunday and Monday is forecasted to be sunny and clear.

HAZARDOUS WEATHER: A powerful upper level storm system forecast to move across Texas and Louisiana the next several days will interact with a warm and humid airmass in place to bring scattered showers and thunderstorms to the entire area from Friday into Saturday. Due to the strength of this storm system, severe thunderstorms appear possible over a long period of time from Friday afternoon through Saturday afternoon. Large hail, damaging winds and isolated tornadoes are all possible with any severe thunderstorms that develop during this time.

LOUISIANA WEATHER - April 7, 2010

SOUTHWEST LOUISIANA: Today will be sunny during the day with a 50 percent chance of thunderstorms in the evening. Thursday through Saturday is forecast to be sunny with the evenings being clear to partly cloudy.

HAZARDOUS WEATHER: A cold front will reach inland southeast Texas right before sunset and move across the forecast area, exiting the lower Atchafalaya basin before daybreak. A broken line of showers and thunderstorms is expected to develop right ahead of the front. Some of the storms could become strong with gusty straight line winds, small hail and frequent cloud to ground lightning. Brief heavy rainfall will be possible with hourly rainfall rates between 1 and 1 1/2 inches. However, due to the progressive nature of the front, rainfall amounts should not be too high with average basin amounts between 1/4 and 1/2 inch. Thursday through Tuesday high pressure will prevail with fair weather through the period.

The Sabine River near Deweyville is currently at 24.03 feet (minor flood stage). Minor flood stage is from 24 to 26 feet. The river is expected to recede below flood stage by Friday. At 24 to 25 feet, minor lowland flooding may occur. Low lying roads in southwestern Beauregard Parish including Robert Clark Road may have water over them.

HAZARDOUS WEATHER: A cold front will enter southeast Louisiana and southern Mississippi late tonight producing a good chance for showers and thunderstorms just before midnight through early Thursday morning. There is a slight risk of severe thunderstorms developing in advance of the front tonight mainly across extreme southwest Mississippi and areas west and north of the Baton Rouge metro area overnight. Any severe thunderstorm activity will be isolated in nature. One or two storms may produce damaging winds. Thunderstorms are likely north of Lake Pontchartrain and on the Mississippi coast Thursday morning. The severe threats are expected to diminish and any severe thunderstorm activity will be isolated in nature Thursday morning. Hazardous weather is not expected Thursday afternoon through Tuesday. Minor flooding will continue at Morgan City on the Atchafalaya River and at Red River landing on the Mississippi River.

The Mississippi River at Red River Landing is currently at 49.21 feet (Minor flood stage). Minor flood stage is from 48 to 55 feet. The river is expected to rise to 49.5 by Friday. At 48 to 51 feet, all river islands along the reach from Red River landing to Baton Rouge will be inundated. Recreational camps and river bottom farm land will be under water. Access roads will be inundated and evacuation of all river islands must be complete. Protection of people and property in the river bottom land on the river side of the levees must be complete.

Afternoon heating and frontal forcing, along with lift provided by the upper level trough, could result in potent storms developing along the cold front. The greater threat of strong to severe thunderstorms will be across northwest and north central Louisiana, as well as south central Arkansas late this afternoon, into the evening hours.
