LOUISIANA WEATHER - July 29, 2011

TROPICAL STORM DON:
GOHSEP and the National Weather Service in conjunction with The National Hurricane Center are monitoring Tropical Storm Don located about 255 miles southeast of Corpus Christi Texas.  TS Don is tracking west-northwest at a forward speed of 14 mph. Don is forecast to make landfall near Baffin Bay around midnight tonight.  Maximum sustained winds are near 50 mph with higher gusts. Gradual strengthening is forecast during the next 36 hours; however Don is forecast to remain a tropical storm. There will be minimal local impacts to southwest Louisiana to include a small rise in tides and slightly enhanced rain chances mainly along the Interstate 10 corridor.

SOUTHEAST LOUISIANA: Today there is a 40 percent chance for daytime thunderstorms and partly cloudy evening skies. Saturday and Sunday will see a 20-30 percent chance of scattered and isolated thunderstorms throughout the day. Monday shows an increase of daytime thunderstorms to 40 percent with a decrease in the evening to 20 percent continuing into Tuesday.
Temperatures: Today: 92/76, Saturday: 92/76, Sunday: 94/77, Monday: 95/76, Tuesday: 94/76.
HAZARDOUS WEATHER: Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected today. A few of the showers and thunderstorms may produce wind gusts of 30 to 35 mph and will also be capable of producing frequent lightning and brief periods of locally heavy rainfall.

Isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected each day, mainly during the afternoon hours. High temperatures will rise into the mid 90s across most areas each day. With a moist air mass in place, heat index values will likely reach or exceed 105 degrees over a large portion of the area for a few hours each afternoon.

SOUTHWEST LOUISIANA:
Today has a 60 percent chance of thunderstorms with a decrease to 20 percent in the evening. Saturday through Monday will see a 20-30 percent slight chance for thunderstorms throughout the day each day. Tuesday is forecast to have a 40 percent chance of thunderstorms during the day decreasing in the evening to a 20 percent chance.
Temperatures: Today: 88/77, Saturday: 91/76, Sunday: 95/77, Monday: 95/77, Tuesday: 95/77.
HAZARDOUS WEATHER: Scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms can be expected through the afternoon hours. The main threat from these storms will be localized heavy rains of 1 to 2 inches over a short period of time, which will quickly result in ponding of water on roadways. As Tropical Storm Don makes landfall across the lower Texas coast this evening, the chances of showers and thunderstorms will decrease from east to west during the overnight hours. Another weakness aloft will bring increased chances of showers and thunderstorms Monday and Tuesday, diminishing later in the week as high pressure aloft continues over the central and southern United States.

CENTRAL LOUISIANA: Today has a 50 percent chance of thunderstorms with a decrease to 20 percent in the evening. Saturday and Sunday will see a 20 percent slight chance for thunderstorms throughout the day each day. Monday and Tuesday is forecast to have a 40 percent chance of thunderstorms during the day then decreasing in the evening to 20 percent.
Temperatures: Today: 90/75, Saturday: 93/75, Sunday: 96/76, Monday: 96/76, Tuesday: 96/76.
HAZARDOUS WEATHER: Scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms can be expected through the afternoon hours. The main threat from these storms will be localized heavy rains of 1 to 2 inches over a short period of time, which will quickly result in ponding of water on roadways.

NORTHERN LOUISIANA: Today has a 60 percent chance of thunderstorms with a decrease to 30 percent chance in the evenings. Saturday through Monday will see a 20-30 percent slight chance for thunderstorms throughout the day each day. Tuesday is forecast to be sunny and hot with partly cloudy evening skies.
Temperatures: Today: 92/76, Saturday: 97/77, Sunday: 100/78, Monday: 101/78, Tuesday: 102/79.
HAZARDOUS WEATHER: Scattered showers and thunderstorms will increase across the four state region today. The better potential for convection development will be over east Texas into northwest and north central Louisiana. The showers and thunderstorms should move to the west and northwest. Any thunderstorm that develops will have the potential to produce strong and gusty winds, brief heavy rainfall and frequent lightning. With the increased rain chances and cloud cover, daytime temperatures will be lower. Heat index values will also be lower.

LOUISIANA WEATHER - July 28, 2011

TROPICAL STORM DON
TS Don is tracking west-northwest at a forward speed of 10mph. The center of TS Don should cross the central Gulf of Mexico today, approach the Texas coast on Friday and reach the Texas coast late Friday night or Saturday. Maximum sustained winds are near 45mph with higher gusts. Gradual strengthening is forecast during the next 36 hours; however Don is forecast to remain a tropical storm. There will be minimal local impacts to southwest Louisiana to include a small rise in tides and slightly enhanced rain chances.

SOUTHEAST LOUISIANA: Today there is an 80 percent chance for daytime thunderstorms decreasing to 20 percent in the evening. Saturday through Monday will see a 20-30 percent chance of scattered and isolated thunderstorms throughout the day each day.
Temperatures: Today: 90/77, Friday: 95/77, Saturday: 95/76, Sunday: 93/76, Monday: 95/75.
HAZARDOUS WEATHER: Numerous showers and thunderstorms will occur across the area today as deep tropical moisture continues over the region and Tropical Storm Don moves westward across the central Gulf of Mexico. Over the coastal waters, southeast winds will increase to 15 to 20 mph with seas building to 4 to 6 feet through tonight. In addition, waterspouts will remain a threat mainly through early afternoon today. Since storm motion will bring showers and thunderstorms on shore today, any waterspouts that occur will have a high potential of moving inland before dissipating. Waterspout potential will begin to ease during the afternoon.

Tropical Storm Don is expected to make landfall along the lower Texas coast shortly after midnight Saturday morning. As Don moves farther west, winds and seas will subside across the coastal waters for the weekend. Showers and thunderstorms will decrease in coverage over the weekend allowing daytime high temperatures to rise into the mid 90s across most areas. Heat index values will likely reach or exceed 105 degrees. A return to scattered daytime thunderstorms is expected during the early part of next week.

SOUTHWEST LOUISIANA:
Today and Friday has a 50 percent chance of thunderstorms with a decrease to 30 percent in the evenings. Saturday through Monday will see a 20-30 percent slight chance for thunderstorms throughout the day each day.
Temperatures: Today: 90/78, Friday: 90/77, Saturday: 91/76, Sunday: 95/77, Monday: 95/77.
HAZARDOUS WEATHER: Scattered showers and thunderstorms can be expected again today through the evening hours, with the highest chances continuing over lower Acadiana. Like yesterday, a few of the storms could produce wind gusts of 40 to 50 mph, frequent lightning and heavy rains of 1 to 2 inches over a short period of time, which will quickly result in ponding of water on roadways.

Lingering moisture across the northern Gulf coupled with the northern fringes of Tropical Storm Don will continue the chance of showers and thunderstorms Friday into Saturday. Tropical Storm Don is expected to make landfall across the lower Texas coast early Saturday morning. As the system moves further inland across the Rio Grande Valley, the chances of showers and thunderstorms will decrease from east to west during the day Saturday. For the remainder of the weekend through Wednesday of next week, the mid to upper level high will be the dominate weather feature.

CENTRAL LOUISIANA: Today and Friday has a 50 percent chance of thunderstorms decreasing to 30 percent in the evenings. Saturday through Monday will see a 20-30 percent slight chance for thunderstorms throughout the day each day
Temperatures: Today: 91/76, Friday: 93/75, Saturday: 93/75, Sunday: 96/76, Monday: 96/76.

For the remainder of the weekend through Wednesday of next week, the mid to upper level high will be the dominate weather feature.

NORTHERN LOUISIANA: Today and Friday has a 50 percent chance of thunderstorms with a decrease to 30 percent in the evenings. Saturday through Monday will see a 20-30 percent slight chance for thunderstorms throughout the day each day
Temperatures: Today: 91/76, Friday: 93/75, Saturday: 93/75, Sunday: 96/76, Monday: 96/76.
HAZARDOUS WEATHER: Scattered showers and thunderstorms will be possible today across much of the four state region, as a series of upper level disturbances drift north into the region from south Louisiana. Any thunderstorm that develops will have the potential to produce strong and gusty winds, brief heavy rainfall and frequent lightning. The storms should diminish this evening with the loss of daytime heating. However, additional shower and thunderstorm redevelopment will be possible overnight as this disturbance lingers over the area.

Brief heavy rainfall, strong gusty winds and frequent lightning will be possible from the stronger storms this weekend and into early next week. Very hot and humid conditions will return to much of the region this weekend and early next week, as the upper level ridge of high pressure begins to build back east across the plains and Mississippi Valley.

LOUISIANA WEATHER July 26, 2011

SOUTHEAST LOUISIANA: Today has an 80 percent chance of scattered thunderstorms during the day decreasing to 40 percent in the evening. Wednesday through Saturday is forecasted to have a 40-60 percent chance of scattered thunderstorms during the day, decreasing to 30 percent each evening.
Temperatures: Today: 89/75, Wednesday: 90/75, Thursday: 91/76, Friday: 92/78, Saturday: 94/77.
HAZARDOUS WEATHER: Widespread showers and scattered thunderstorms are expected across the area again today, into the evening hours and persist through much of the remainder of work week. The best chance for precipitation will be from the mid and late morning hours through the afternoon. Some of the showers and thunderstorms could produce locally heavy amounts of rain in a relatively short period of time. Widespread rainfall amounts of 1 to 2 inches can be expected today with localized 3 to 4 inch amounts possible. A flash flood watch is in effect through 7 pm this evening. Although severe thunderstorm development is not expected over land areas today, a few thunderstorms over the coastal waters and tidal lakes could produce waterspouts.

A somewhat drier pattern is expected to take hold over the weekend with showers and thunderstorms becoming more scattered in nature. This means temperatures will be rising into the mid 90s for highs over many areas over the weekend with heat index values likely reaching or exceeding 105 degrees.

SOUTHWEST LOUISIANA:
Today through Friday has a 40 percent chance of thunderstorms during the day decreasing to 30 percent in the evenings and continuing on into Saturday.
Temperatures: Today: 92/78, Wednesday: 93/79, Thursday: 93/77, Friday: 94/77, Saturday: 94/76.
HAZARDOUS WEATHER: Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected again through this evening and through the rest of the week, as a very moist and unstable air mass combines with a weakness in the atmosphere aloft. Although severe weather is not expected, a few of the storms could produce wind gusts to 40 mph and frequent dangerous lightning along with heavy rains which will quickly result in ponding of water on roadways. On the coastal waters the storms will produce brief gusty winds, rough seas and heavy rains reducing the visibility to a mile or less.

CENTRAL LOUISIANA: Today through Friday has a 50 percent chance of thunderstorms during the day decreasing to 30 percent each evening. Saturday is forecast to have a 20-30 percent chance of thunderstorms throughout the day.

On the coastal waters the storms will produce brief gusty winds, rough seas and heavy rains reducing the visibility to a mile or less.

NORTHERN LOUISIANA: Today and Wednesday has a 20-30 percent chance of thunderstorms throughout the day each day. Thursday and Friday is forecasted to have a 30-40 percent chance of thunderstorms throughout the day each day. Thunderstorms will decrease to 20 percent on Saturday.
Temperatures: Today: 100/78, Wednesday: 101/78, Thursday: 99/78, Friday: 97/78, Saturday: 98/78.
HAZARDOUS WEATHER: A heat advisory remains in effect through 9 pm this evening for northwest Louisiana, west of a Prescott and Lewisville Arkansas, to Bossier City and Many Louisiana line. Afternoon temperatures will again range from the upper 90s to in excess of 100 degrees. These temperatures, when combined with the increased humidity, will produce heat index values in excess of 105 degrees this afternoon and early evening across the advisory area.

Scattered showers and thunderstorms will be possible this morning across the region, as one upper level disturbance over eastern Oklahoma drops south across northeast Texas, while a separate disturbance over west central Mississippi drifts south as well and enhances thunderstorm development over northeast Louisiana. Any thunderstorm that develops will have the potential to produce strong and gusty winds, brief heavy rainfall and frequent lightning. These storms should diminish from north to south by this afternoon.

Drought impacts are projected to ease in the extreme southeast region.
