Weather Report - July 30, 2012

Hot, Hotter, Hottest!

**Heat Advisory Until 7:00 PM**

Overall, we've pretty much "turned off" the water faucet and "cranked up" the heat for these last few days in the month of July! Due to a huge ridge of high pressure - controlling our weather - we'll see very little in the way of rainfall and a lot of afternoon temperatures pushing very close to record highs! And, even though our official high for today is forecast to reach 97 degrees (the record, 99 set in 1986); the "feels like" temperature will be more in the range of 108 degrees (or higher) for at least three hours! As a result, the National Weather Service has placed virtually our entire state (and southern Mississippi) under a "heat advisory" until 7:00 PM. Rain coverage will be rather limited, too through Wednesday (20% or less), a bit more favorable Thursday, at 40%! - Diane Deaton, WAFB Storm Team

NOTE:   Latest news from the NWS is that any thunderstorms this afternoon may be a little strong!

Weather Report - July 27, 2012

Final Days of July Hot, Scattered Showers ...

We'll continue to look for scattered showers throughout southeast Louisiana and southern Mississippi over the course of the next couple of days (50% chance today, tomorrow). However, by Sunday and Monday, the moisture content not as high,(the cool front all but washing out) resulting in only isolated showers (20%). And, summer heat will be quite obvious ... daytime highs in the low/mid 90's ... the "feels like" temperature over 105 degrees! - Diane Deaton, WAFB Storm Team

Weather Report - July 25, 2012

  Summertime Heat and Humidity!

Looks as if the rain chance will stay in the spotty to isolated category today and tomorrow - thanks to a substantial ridge of high pressure to our north! What that means for southeast Louisiana and southern Mississippi is our afternoon high will continue to top out in the mid 90s ... but the "feels like" temperature will soar into the range of 105+! Overall, this ridge will likely weaken, a bit, allowing a cool front to move in (but probably stalling to our north); nonetheless, giving us a 40% rain chance Friday. - Diane Deaton, WAFB Storm Team

Weather Report - July 24, 2012

Limited Rain Chances Rest of Work Week

A drier weather pattern is shaping up this week. Only spotty to iso’d afternoon t-showers are expected for the remainder of the work week. With the lower chance for rain, high temperatures will soar into the mid 90°s. Heat index values will reach the triple digits during most afternoons so please be careful if you are planning to be outside for extended periods of time. Rain coverage might creep up a bit for next weekend as a ridge of high pressure over the area weakens slightly. Expect sct’d showers and storms both Saturday and Sunday. The ridge is then expected to strengthen again into next week limiting rain chances. - Jeff Morrow / WAFB Storm Team

Weather Report - July 23, 2012

Hot - drier - end of July!

Finally, an opportunity to work in our water- logged yards ... all this week rain chances will, at last, drop into the range of 20% - 30%! That is, after today - when we still have a decent chance for a few scattered showers/storms (40%). However, the flip side to the drier weather will be hot and humid conditions ... highs will top out in the mid 90s virtually all this week - with "feel like temperatures" in the triple digits. Remember, folks that will be outdoors for extended periods of time this week should take the proper precautions!! - Diane Deaton, WAFB Storm Team

Weather Report - July 20, 2012

Another Summer Weekend, Another Wet One?

Looks like we're not out of the woods yet as far as even more rain is concerned! The combination of disturbances approaching both from the east and north will lead to scattered/numerous showers and possibly locally heavy rainfall over the next couple of days. Later this afternoon, we'll bump up the chance for additional wet weather to 70% (in the "likely" category); 60% tomorrow! Overall, though, we should see rain chances returning to somewhat more "normal" summertime percentages, 30% - 40% by next week. However, that will also result in slightly hotter afternoon temperatures, back in the mid 90s! - Diane Deaton, WAFB Storm Team

Weather Report - July 19, 2012

Showers and Storms Won't Go Away!

At least this morning, we're waking to a significantly quieter scan on Titan 9 Doppler radar ... compared to late last night when many neighborhoods experienced very wet weather! Overall, rain chances stand at 50 - 50 today, tomorrow and Saturday, we're back to 60%; 50 - 50 again Sunday. Afternoon highs will continue to push into the low/mid 90s ... heating up again early next week, when rain chances diminish to "only" 30%! - Diane Deaton, WAFB Storm Team

Weather Report - July 18, 2012

Sct'd Showers Rest of Week

The brief ridge has begun to shift farther to the west. That will translate again into higher rain chances to end the week. Sct'd showers and storms will be possible for the rest of the work week. A trough and upper level low will provide for a potentially wet weekend. Rain chances will fall into the likely category Saturday. Highs over the next 7 days will hover just above the 90° mark, and morning lows will be in the mid 70°s. - Jeff Morrow & Diane Deaton / WAFB Storm Team

Weather Report - July 17, 2012

Drier Weather Today

High pressure will build in today allowing for mostly dry weather across the viewing area. We won’t be completely dry, but rain coverage will remain limited today and tomorrow. Rain coverage will slowly increase as we end the week and head into next weekend. It looks like the weekend will give us the best chance for rain with a 50% coverage of showers and storms. Highs the next few days will be in the mid 90°s with low 90°s to end the week. Morning lows the rest of the week will be in the mid 70°s. -- Jeff Morrow / WAFB

Weather Report - July 16, 2012

Has the Rain Gone Away?

Well ... not exactly - but, the chance for widespread coverage on Titan 9 Doppler radar is not as high as it has been! In fact, the "big rain system" (that pesky low pressure area) has now moved off to the west, replaced (temporarily) with high pressure. So, that means only a 20% - 30% rain chance through Wednesday; however, unsettled weather returns by Thursday due, in part, to a system moving westward from the east coast (50% - 60% rain chance through the weekend!). - Diane Deaton, WAFB Storm Team

Weather Report - July 13, 2012

Rain, Rain Go Away!

Our very wet month of July continues ... with the probability of even more rain staying in the "likely" category today and tomorrow! Overall, the morning drive should stay generally dry; however, it's during the afternoon/evening that another round of showers/storms will return to our viewing area. And, we'll keep a 50% - 60% chance of additional wet weather in the forecast over the weekend; "diminishing a bit" Monday through Thursday of next week (30% - 40%)! - Diane Deaton, WAFB Storm Team

Thursday, July 12, 2012

Weather Report - July 12, 2012

Raindrops Keep Fallin' ...

Again this morning, we're waking to more activity on Titan 9 Doppler radar; however, the heaviest rainfall is well to the west and north of our viewing area. In fact, a *flash flood watch* stays in effect through this evening for the central/western parishes of our state as well as the eastern counties of Texas! And, it looks as if this wet weather will continue right on into the weekend, with rain chances 50% to 60% each day. At least that will help keep afternoon highs near or below 90 degrees for a little while longer! - Diane Deaton, WAFB Storm Team

Weather Report - July 10, 2012

Decent Rain Coverage Today

Umbrellas will be needed for the rest of the week. Sct’d showers and t-storms are expected to remain in the forecast for the next several days. So while your backyard might not see rain everyday this week, you might see rain on a handful of days over the next 7 days. A 50% coverage of t-showers is possible within the WAFB viewing area today with slightly lower coverage for the rest of the week. Highs today will top out in the upper 80°s, but for the rest of the week highs are forecasted to be in the low 90°s. The morning’s will be mainly dry with just a few iso’d t-showers in the forecast. Morning lows will be in the low to mid 70°s for the next 7 days. - Jeff Morrow / WAFB Storm Team

Weather Report - July 9, 2012

Dry in June, Soggy in July!

Areas of moderate/heavy rainfall were reported throughout our viewing area this past weekend and it appears more wet weather can be expected over the course of the next several days! The ridge of high pressure - that had basically controlled our weather the past few weeks - is now shifting westward, allowing the influence of a trough as well as weak cool front (stalling to the north) keeps high rain chances in our forecast. At least a trade off ... "cooler" afternoon highs, in the upper 80s to lower 90s! - Diane Deaton, WAFB Storm Team

Weather Report - July 6, 2012

A Rainy Start to July!

At last, we have rain in the forecast ... not only for today but for the next several days! This returning wet weather pattern is due to a disturbance moving westward along the Gulf Coast; so, count on a 60% - 70% chance for showers/storms later today, 50-50 tomorrow, 30% Sunday. And, with the potential clouds and rainfall ahead, we'll also have slightly "cooler" daytime highs ... instead of the mid/upper 90s, "only" the lower 90s by early next week! - Diane Deaton, WAFB Storm Team

Weather Report - July 5, 2012

Rain Chances on the Rise

Increased rain chances over the next several days should keep the summer heat in check. Highs will stay in the low to mid 90°s, but heat index values should stay much lower. Not to mention as showers and storms begin the temperature should start to drop thanks to the added cloud cover. We'll see sct'd showers and storms today with a likely rain chance of Friday. For the weekend rain chances will once again stay scattered in nature and will stay that way for the first half of next week. - Jeff Morrow & Diane Deaton / WAFB Storm Team

Weather Report - July 3, 2012

More Heat, Humidity - Little Rainfall!

Looks like the ongoing heat/humidity will stay with us through the week ... with highs rather consistent, in the mid 90s! Add to that just a little rainfall over the next few days and no relief by way of Mother Nature - until possibly over the weekend! Our forecast is now calling for an increase in rain chances by the weekend (30% - 40%) providing at least some momentary relief from the summer heat! As a result, scattered showers/storms should help to hold highs in the low/mid 90°s instead of the mid to upper 90°s! - Diane Deaton, WAFB Storm Team

Weather Report - July 2, 2012

DEQ Declares "Ozone Action Day"

Today, our air quality forecast is "Code Orange", unhealthy for sensitive groups. As a result, our air quality could become a concern as winds stay light and, unfortunately, rain chances will still be quite limited. And, while we won't "technically" experience afternoon highs in triple digits, it certainly will "feel like" it ... as our heat index soars to over 100 degrees! Looking ahead, not much of any major change tomorrow and our 4th of July forecast should stay relatively dry (20%) with the main weather story being the heat!! - Diane Deaton, WAFB Storm Team
