IMPACTS:  Any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly.  Outdoor burning is not recommended.

HAZARDOUS WEATHER:  Brisk northwest winds near 15 to 25 MPH, with gusts as high as 35 MPH.  These winds will make for very choppy conditions on area lakes.  In addition, the strong winds and very low humidity values will result in a heightened fire danger threat throughout the day as well.  Winds will diminish quickly this evening with cold high pressure moving into the region from the west.  This will result in overnight low temperatures tonight falling into the mid to upper 30’s.  Patchy frost will be possible area wide late tonight.

A Lake Wind Advisory remains in effect until 7PM this evening.   A Lake Wind Advisory indicates that winds will cause rough chop on area lakes.  Small boats will be especially prone to capsizing.

LOUISIANA WEATHER - October 17, 2011

SOUTHEAST LOUISIANA: Today through Friday is forecast to be sunny to mostly sunny during the day and clear to mostly clear at night. Tonight into tomorrow’s early morning hours will have areas of patchy fog.
Temperatures: Today: 89/62, Tuesday: 83/50, Wednesday: 67/43, Thursday: 69/43, Friday: 72/46.
Hazardous Weather:  Small craft should exercise caution in the outer coastal waters through today.

A strong cold front will push through the region Tuesday. After the passage of this cold front, winds will quickly shift to the north and increase in speed. This could lead to wind issues over both the land and marine areas.

Over the land zones, winds of 20 to 30 mph with gusts of 35 to 40 mph will occur Tuesday afternoon and Tuesday night, especially south of Lake Pontchartrain. A wind advisory has been issued for the south shore where sustained winds of 25 to 30 mph and gusts approaching 40 mph are expected. The advisory will be in effect from late Tuesday afternoon and through the evening.

Over the marine zones, northwest to north winds will quickly become sustained at 35 to 40 mph with gusts to 45 mph or greater expected. A gale watch has been issued for all marine zones for the time frame of late Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday morning.

SOUTHWEST LOUISIANA: Today through Friday is forecast to be sunny to mostly sunny during the day and clear to mostly clear at night. Tonight into the early morning hours of Tuesday will have areas of patchy fog.
Temperatures: Today: 88/67, Tuesday: 75/49, Wednesday: 72/46, Thursday: 73/45, Friday: 74/48.
HAZARDOUS WEATHER:  Warm sunny conditions are expected with some patchy fog, dense at times, during the late night.

A strong cold front will move across the region on Tuesday morning. Much drier and unseasonably cool conditions will occur behind the front for much of the work week.

CENTRAL LOUISIANA: Today through Friday is forecast to be sunny during the day and clear to mostly clear at night. Tonight into tomorrow morning there is a 20 percent slight chance of showers.
Temperatures: Today: 88/61, Tuesday: 73/45, Wednesday: 70/42, Thursday: 71/40, Friday: 73/44.
HAZARDOUS WEATHER:  Warm sunny conditions are expected with some patchy fog, dense at times, during the late night.

A strong cold front will move across the region on Tuesday morning. Much drier and unseasonably cool conditions will occur behind the front for much of the work week.

NORTHERN LOUISIANA: Today will be partly sunny during the day with a 60 percent chance for thunderstorms at night and continuing on into Tuesday morning. Wednesday through Friday is forecast to be sunny to mostly sunny during the day and mostly clear at night
Temperatures: Today: 92/60, Tuesday: 68/44, Wednesday: 70/39, Thursday: 67/42, Friday: 72/48.
HAZARDOUS WEATHER:  A strong upper level storm system will move out of the Rockies into the Southern Plains and Lower Mississippi Valley late this afternoon and overnight. Showers and thunderstorms will likely develop along a strong cold front across north central Texas and Oklahoma late this afternoon with this convection spreading eastward into the region late tonight. Isolated strong to severe thunderstorms cannot be ruled out given the cold temperatures aloft in association with the area of low pressure, but widespread severe thunderstorm activity is not anticipated at this time. The convection should move east of the region Tuesday morning.

Strong northwest winds, sustained at 15 to 25 mph with higher gusts, are expected across the region on Tuesday, resulting in an elevated fire danger threat. Winds will diminish Tuesday evening across the region.
