Weather Report - July 31, 2013

Closing Out July Hot & Humid

It looks like our run of hot, humid and relatively dry weather will close out the month of July and continue into the early days of August. Highs will continue to top out in the low to mid 90°s through the remainder of the week, with daily rain chances only running around 20%. A cool front will attempt to approach late Thursday into Friday but likely won't have a big impact on our weather. We may see slightly better rain chances, but hot weather is expected to continue into the weekend. - Jay Grymes & Steve Caparotta / WAFB Storm Team

Weather Report - July 30, 2013

Hot, Isolated Storms Next Couple of Days

High pressure should keep things hot and mainly dry for us over the next couple of days. Look for highs to reach the low to mid 90°s, with rain chances running 20% or less on Tuesday and Wednesday. The ridge of high pressure should shift to our west by late in the week, perhaps allowing for a slightly better chance of showers and t-storms. Overall, there are no indications of any widespread rains headed our way over the next 7 days and temps should be running pretty close to normal. - Jay Grymes & Steve Caparotta / WAFB Storm Team

Weather Report - July 26, 2013

Mainly Dry Today, Higher Rain Chance Saturday

It will be another mainly dry day ahead with partly cloudy skies and maybe an iso'd t-shower or two. Highs today will reach the low to mid 90°s. A disturbance from the north will pass South Louisiana on Saturday. This will trigger a likely chance for showers and t-storms. Due to the higher chance for rain and additional cloud cover highs on Saturday will settle in the mid to upper 80°s. Next week the weather pattern will turn more typical for this time of year. Temperatures will be hot and steamy with a slight chance for afternoon showers and t-storms. Lows will stay in the low to mid 70°s and highs will reach the low to mid 90°s. - Jeff Morrow & Diane Deaton / WAFB Storm Team

Weather Report - July 24, 2013

Iso'd Storms Possible Today and Tomorrow

Shower and t-storm activity will be isolated to end the work week. Heat and humidity will be in place Thursday and Friday with highs reaching the mid 90°s. Factor in the humidity and it may feel more like the triple digits. A trough will approach over the weekend pushing high pressure away from the area. This will result in increasing rain coverage Saturday and Sunday with 40-50% coverage possible. The higher rain chance will result in slightly cooler temperatures. High pressure moves back over the area to start the next work week. Rain chances will remain slight with high temps going back into the mid 90°s. - Jeff Morrow & Diane Deaton / WAFB Storm Team

Weather Report - July 24, 2013

Staying Hot, Mainly Dry on Wednesday

Hot and relatively dry weather is expected to continue for at least a couple more days. We'll make another run at high temps in the mid 90°s on Wednesday, with just a slim chance of seeing a shower or t-storm. A cool front may nudge closer to the area by Thursday, but at this point we'll keep rain chances around 20%. Assuming the low rain coverage holds, highs should once again reach the mid 90°s on Thursday. The pattern may change a bit by the weekend, potentially allowing the 'cool' front to slip to the coast. If it does so, we wouldn't see a big drop in temps, but could receive a modest break in humidity. However, with the front nearby, we'll go with a little better chance of showers and t-storms over the weekend, particularly on Sunday. - Jay Grymes & Steve Caparotta / WAFB Storm Team

Weather Report - July 23, 2013

Turns Hot Next Several Days

High pressure is building bringing with it drier and hotter weather. Rain chances will be near 0% today and tomorrow which means daytime highs will be several degrees warmer than what we’ve seen over the last few days. Highs Tuesday will be in the mid 90°s but when we factor in the humidity it will feel more like the triple digits. Humidity will remain high through the week as surface winds stay out of the south. Highs will stay in the mid 90°s all week which is a couple of degrees above average for this time of year. A few iso’d showers may be possible Thursday through Saturday. Rain chances will be higher late Saturday into Sunday as a cold front…yes a cold front moves into the area. Sct’d showers and t-storms will be possible on Sunday as the front pushes through. This will yield only a slight relief from the heat and humidity for the start of next week. - Jeff Morrow / WAFB Storm Team

Weather Report - July 22, 2013

Big Time Rains Seen Sunday

We saw a wide array of rainfall totals from Sunday’s storms. Some spots got dumped on with 2-3” totals while others saw nothing more than a sprinkle. Deep tropical moisture will stay in place for at least one more day on Monday but most of the heavy rain will shift along eastern sections of the WAFB viewing area. Sct’d showers and t-storms are expected to develop Monday afternoon as the heat of the day heats up the available moisture field. An additional 0.50” can be expected on average Monday for those that see the rain. Things then turn drier and hotter for the rest of the week. High pressure will move overhead creating a heat wave of sorts for South Louisiana. A mainly dry forecast is in place Tuesday through next Saturday. Rain coverage will be 20% or less each day. This will cause highs to soar above average reaching the mid 90°s with heat index values in the triple digits. Sct’d showers and storms may return by the end of the weekend as a trough approaches. - Jeff Morrow / WAFB Storm Team

Weather Report - July 16, 2013

Heavy Rain Possible Today

Grab the umbrella today as rain coverage enters the likely category. A 60% coverage of showers and t-storms is expected today with heavy rain a definite possibility with some of these storms. Rain accumulations of 1-2" are not out of the question today. High pressure will move into the area starting Wednesday. This will lessen the rain chance considerably as we end the work week. With the lower rain chances we will see an increase in afternoon high temperatures. Expect daytime highs in the low to mid 90°s to end the work week, but factor in the humidity and it may feel more like the triple digits. Rain chances will be sct’d for the upcoming weekend. Weather Report - July 15, 2013

Higher Rain Coverage Next Few Days

Rain coverage will be increasing over the next couple of days. A surge in deep tropical moisture will result in sct’d to numerous showers and t-storms Monday with rain on the likely side Tuesday. Rainfall accumulations of 1-2” will be common place over the two day period with even higher totals on a more local level. Sct’d showers and t-storms will remain in the forecast on Wednesday mainly during the afternoon hours. Temperatures during this time will be below normal. High pressure will build to end the work week keeping things a little drier. Only a 20-30% coverage of t-showers is expected Thursday and Friday. That means high temperatures will climb into the mid 90°s with heat index values closing in on the triple digits. Rain chances will once again increase slightly for the following weekend. Sct’d showers and t-storms will be possible both Saturday and Sunday. - Jeff Morrow / WAFB Storm Team

Weather Report - July 11, 2013

Better Rain Chances on Thursday

An approaching cool front should help deliver a better chance of showers and t-storms on Thursday and perhaps for at least a part of Friday as well. We'll set Thursday's rain chances at 40% - 50%, with highs topping out in the lower 90°s. Scattered showers and t-storms remain possible on Friday as the front tries to make it down to our coast. If it does, we could enjoy a somewhat drier, less humid day on Saturday, but the exact stall point of the front remains uncertain. Even if it does make it to our south, humidity and better rain chances should quickly return from Sunday into next week. - Jay Grymes & Steve Caparotta / WAFB Storm Team

Weather Report - July 10, 2013

Staying Hot, Scattered PM T-Storms

It looks like typical hot and humid July weather will continue for the next couple of days, with scattered showers and t-storms mainly during the afternoon hours. By the end of the week, a cool front is expected to approach from the north. If the front actually makes it down to the coast, we may see a brief period of drier conditions Friday into Saturday, but that remains to be seen. An upper-low moving westward along the Gulf Coast should bring a return of better rain chances by the second half of the weekend. - Jay Grymes & Steve Caparotta / WAFB Storm Team

Weather Report - July 9, 2013

Summertime Pattern Continues

Scattered showers and t-storms are expected again this afternoon. Highs will hit the low 90°s before the clouds and rain move in to cool us down. Overnight should be dry with a low in the mid 70°s. We start it all over again Wednesday afternoon as sct’d showers and t-storms develop. We won’t see much change in this typical summertime pattern for the rest of the week in fact. The only little change maybe highs climbing into the mid 90°s to end the week. The weekend forecast remains a little uncertain due to a number of factors. Weather Report - July 5, 2013

Turning Much Wetter into the Weekend!

Looks like the evening fireworks and festivities will go off without a hitch across South Louisiana and SW Mississippi, but you'll be wanting the umbrella by your side for the coming days. Sparked by a broad easterly wave over the Gulf, we're calling for a 50-50 rain chance for Friday afternoon and rain likely for both Saturday and Sunday. Baton Rouge metro area rain totals are likely to run from 1" to 3" (with locally-higher totals) between now and late Sunday, with even higher totals possible closer to the coast. However, the good news is that we are not concerned about significant tropical development .. at least over the next few days. -- Jay Grymes / WAFB Storm Team

Weather Report - July 3, 2013

Relatively Nice Again on Wednesday

Wednesday should be another fairly comfortable early July day with morning lows in the 60°s and afternoon highs near 90° getting a little help from low humidity. We do think there will be a slightly better chance of seeing a shower or t-storm, with rain chances running 20% to 30% around the area. The 4th of July is shaping up to be a similar day, albeit a bit more humid. We'll set afternoon rain chances at 20% - 30%, with highs reaching the lower 90°s. Evening fireworks displays around the area will likely be dry. A big surge of tropical moisture arrives by Friday, with numerous showers and t-storms expected to develop. In fact, rain chances will run 60% - 70% each day from Friday through Sunday. Increased cloud cover and rainfall should keep weekend highs in the mid to upper 80°s. - Jay Grymes & Steve Caparotta / WAFB Storm Team

Weather Report - July 2, 2013

Staying Nice on Tuesday

We are enjoying a real weather 'bargain' for the first day of July in south Louisiana! Yes, it's still warm, but temperatures that are several degrees below-normal, combined with humidity levels well below summertime norms have made for a nice start to the month of July! We'll enjoy one more day of pleasant conditions on Tuesday before our typical July 'muggies' return. Tuesday starts out in the mid 60°s around metro Baton Rouge and while highs will reach the upper 80°s, lower than normal humidity should make for a pretty decent day. Gulf moisture will begin to return to the area by Wednesday and will arrive in earnest late this week. We'll go with isolated showers and t-storms on Wednesday and scattered rains (30% - 40%) for the 4th of July. It looks like we're in for a pretty wet weekend, with the potential for some heavy rains beginning on Friday. - Jay Grymes & Steve Caparotta / WAFB Storm Team

Weather Report - July 1, 2013

Monday Is Looking Nice

Another nice day is on tap for Monday. The morning start will be cooler with lows in the mid to upper 60°s. Into the afternoon highs will top out in the upper 80°s under fair to partly cloudy skies. Humidity levels will once again be low. Humidity will slowly begin returning by Tuesday as southerly flow returns during the afternoon. Highs will remain in the low 90°s. A slight rain chance will exist Tuesday and Wednesday as moisture slowly returns. Sct’d showers and t-storms will be possible on 4th of July Thursday. These showers should be confined to the afternoon hours. Friday looks to be a complete wash out. Numerous showers and t-storms will be present throughout the day as a surge of tropical moisture passes overhead. High rain chances will continue into the weekend as this surge of moisture slowly leaves. Expect the possibility of very heavy rainfall and flash flooding Friday through next Sunday. - Jeff Morrow, WAFB Storm Team
