LOUISIANA WEATHER - January 3, 2011

SOUTHEAST LOUISIANA: Today will be sunny during the day and clear at night.  Wednesday and Thursday will be mostly sunny during the day and mostly cloudy at night.  Friday will have a 20 percent chance of rain throughout the day.  Saturday will be mostly cloudy with a chance of showers throughout the day.

Temperatures: Today: 52/29, Wednesday: 63/48, Thursday: 69/53, Friday: 69/54, Saturday: 73/54

Pearl River at Bogalusa:

Current Stage: 18.48 feet (Minor Flood Stage)

Minor Flood Stage is 18 - 21 feet.

The river has already crested and is expected to fall below flood stage by Wednesday evening.

POTENTIAL IMPACT: At 17 to 18.5 feet, woodlands and crop acreage along the river may be flooded.
 
HAZARDOUS WEATHER: A hard freeze warning has been issued for late tonight and early Wednesday morning for areas of southeast Louisiana north of Lake Pontchartrain to the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Low temperatures are expected to reach the mid 20’s for several hours with a much longer period of sub freezing temperatures.

 

A freeze warning has been issued for late tonight and early Wednesday morning over portions of the river parishes, metropolitan New Orleans, and south to areas just inland from the immediate Gulf coastal marshes and bays. A light to moderate freeze is expected in these areas between midnight and 8 am Wednesday.

 

SOUTHWEST LOUISIANA:  Today will be sunny during the day and mostly clear at night.  Wednesday and Thursday will be partly sunny during the day and mostly cloudy at night.  Friday and Saturday will have 20 percent chance of showers throughout the day.
 
Temperatures: Today: 55/36, Wednesday: 65/50, Thursday: 68/50, Friday: 71/55, Saturday: 73/48
HAZARDOUS WEATHER: Temperatures are again expected to fall to near freezing from around Alexandria to central portions of the Atchafalaya basin late tonight into Wednesday morning.

 

Atchafalaya River at Morgan City:

Current Stage: 5.04 feet (Minor Flood Stage)

Minor Flood Stage is from 4 -7 feet

The river is expected to fluctuate between 4.9 and 5.2 feet through at least Sunday 8 January 2012.

POTENTIAL IMPACT: At 4-5 feet, water may move up the bank and across access roads below the city dock. Floodwall gates should be closed by the 5 foot stage to protect against higher stages. Vessel traffic will be affected by stronger river current and vessel safety rules will be strictly enforced by the U.S. Coast Guard.

  
CENTRAL LOUISIANA:  Today through Thursday will be mostly sunny during the day and mostly cloudy at night.  Friday and Saturday has a 20 percent chance of showers throughout the day.
Temperatures: Today: 53/30, Wednesday: 61/43, Thursday: 66/47, Friday: 71/53, Saturday: 73/45
HAZARDOUS WEATHER: Temperatures are again expected to fall to near freezing from around Alexandria to central portions of the Atchafalaya basin late tonight into Wednesday morning.

 

NORTHERN LOUISIANA: Today through Friday will be partly sunny during the day and mostly clear at night.  Saturday has a 20 percent chance of showers during the day and cloudy at night.

HAZARDOUS WEATHER: No hazardous weather is expected at this time.
