LOUISIANA WEATHER - August 11, 2011

SOUTHEAST LOUISIANA: Today will be hot and sunny during the day and mostly clear tonight. Friday and Saturday has a 20 percent chance for daytime thunderstorms improving to partly to mostly cloudy at night. Sunday has a 30 percent chance for daytime thunderstorms decreasing to 20 percent at night. Monday has a chance of daytime isolated thunderstorms improving to partly cloudy at night.       Temperatures: Today: 96/77, Friday: 96/77, Saturday: 95/76, Sunday: 96/75, Monday: 95/74.
HAZARDOUS WEATHER: The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity will result in heat indices of 105 to 110 in many areas today. A heat advisory is in effect through tonight for southern Mississippi, southeast Louisiana, the tidal lakes, sounds and near-shore waters. Very isolated thunderstorms are possible today. The main threats will be frequent lightning, strong gusty winds and brief periods of locally heavy rainfall.

Heat indices are expected to rise to 105 to 110 degrees again on Friday causing the heat advisory to be extended through at least Friday. Only isolated thunderstorms are expected each day through Saturday while isolated to scattered thunderstorms are expected Sunday and Tuesday. Widespread severe weather is not expected, but a few storms could produce frequent lightning, strong gusty winds and brief periods of locally heavy rainfall.

SOUTHWEST LOUISIANA: Today through Saturday will be sunny and hot during the day and partly cloudy at night. There is a 20 percent chance for thunderstorms Sunday throughout the day and night and again during the day Monday with Monday night being partly cloudy.                                                                                                                                                                                                                             Temperatures: Today: 99/79, Friday: 98/79, Saturday: 98/77, Sunday: 95/76, Monday: 95/76.
HAZARDOUS WEATHER: Hot conditions will continue with air temperatures in the middle to upper 90s along the I-10 corridor and around 100 north of the I-10 corridor. When combined with relative humidity, the heat index, or apparent temperature, will be between 108 and 112 degrees. These near dangerous heat index readings will occur between noon and 6 PM and a heat advisory is in effect.

The hot conditions will continue on Friday and heat indices could approach 108 degrees in a few locations. The upper ridge will gradually shift back to the west over the weekend allowing temperatures to be a few degrees lower and bring a slightly better chance for showers.

CENTRAL LOUISIANA: Today through Saturday will be hot and sunny during the day and partly cloudy at night. There is a 20 percent chance for thunderstorms from Sunday morning through Monday during the day with Monday night being partly cloudy.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                              Temperatures: Today: 101/79, Friday: 100/78, Saturday: 99/77, Sunday: 96/76, Monday: 96/76.

NORTHERN LOUISIANA: There is a 20 percent chance for daytime and nighttime thunderstorms today through Sunday with Sunday night becoming partly cloudy. HAZARDOUS WEATHER: High temperatures will range from around 100 to near 105 degrees today yielding heat index values between 105 and 110 degrees. Therefore, a heat advisory remains in effect. Precautions should be taken to protect against heat related illnesses resulting from outdoor exposure or inadequately cooled buildings. Isolated showers and thunderstorms will be possible generally north of the I-20 corridor today and tonight. Strong gusty winds will be possible with any storms that develop.

Isolated showers and thunderstorms may develop during the afternoon hours bringing temporary relief from the hot conditions. The best chances for thunderstorms will likely be late Friday and into early Saturday. Gusty winds will be the primary threats from any storms that develop.
