FW: LOUISIANA WEATHER - August 31, 2011

SOUTHEAST LOUISIANA: This afternoon will be hot and sunny with a 20 percent chance of isolated thunderstorms.  Thursday through Saturday will be mostly cloudy with a 40-60 percent chance of scattered thunderstorms each day.  Sunday will be mostly cloudy with a chance for scattered thunderstorms.

Temperatures: Today: 95/80, Thursday: 91/80, Friday: 89/80, Saturday: 89/78, Sunday: 88/77
HAZARDOUS WEATHER:    A surface low is expected to develop over the Western Gulf of Mexico late this week.  There are still many uncertainties in location, strength and whether this will be a true tropical system. Showers and thunderstorms will begin to develop over the area Wednesday night or Thursday and increase in coverage through the weekend.  The main threat for the northern Gulf Coast Region will be heavy rainfall, especially throughout the coastal Louisiana Parishes.

Winds over the coastal waters will increase late Wednesday night and by Thursday sustained winds of 17 to 23 mph with higher gusts are expected. Winds will continue to increase and at the least a small craft advisory will likely be needed by Friday for the outer coastal waters. Seas will respond with a well developed swell out of the southeast by Friday. This will combine with waves to create seas of 6 feet to as high as 10 feet by Friday night and into the weekend.

Prolonged onshore winds will lead to tides 1 to 2 feet above normal beginning Friday and continue through at least Saturday.  Southeast facing shores of southeast Louisiana will see the most impacts.

The Department of Environmental Quality has issued an Air Quality Alert for Southeast Louisiana, including the New Orleans and Baton Rouge Metropolitan areas.
Air Quality Monitors in both the New Orleans and Baton Rouge areas show elevated levels of particulate matter in the air due to a marsh fire burning in eastern Orleans Parish.  While the highest impacts will be felt across areas that are generally west and west northwest of the fire, minor impacts will be possible across most of southeast Louisiana.  Winds are forecast to strengthen this afternoon and should help disperse the smoke more effectively.
Throughout the day, particulate matter concentrations will fluctuate between moderate and unhealthy.

SOUTHWEST LOUISIANA: Today will be mostly sunny and hot during the day and partly cloudy tonight.  Thursday through Saturday will be mostly cloudy with a 30-40 percent chance for scattered thunderstorms each day.  Sunday will be mostly cloudy with a chance for scattered thunderstorms.
Temperatures: Today: 97/75, Thursday: 94/76, Friday: 92/75, Saturday: 90/75, Sunday: 89/75
HAZARDOUS WEATHER:   Hot and dry conditions will prevail.  Apparent temperatures will be between 100 and 105 this afternoon.  A Tropical Wave will meander across the northern and western Gulf of Mexico through the weekend.  There is still some uncertainty on just how strong and where this system will develop.  At the least, an increase in showers and thunderstorms can be expected with the heaviest rainfall along and south of the Interstate 10 corridor.  Also, a persistent moderate east to southeast wind flow will allow for some water piling along the coast with tides possibly up to one foot above predicted levels during the weekend.

CENTRAL LOUISIANA: Today will be hot and sunny during the day and partly cloudy tonight. Thursday through Sunday will be cloudy with a 20-30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms each day.

Temperatures:  Today: 101/72, Thursday: 98/75, Friday: 95/74, Saturday: 94/74, Sunday: 92/74
